Company Town For over 70 years, Saltville, Virginia existed as a company town. The Mathieson Alkali Works was established in the 1890's to produce a variety of products using the abundant mineral resources of the area. Throughout the years and until the plant closed in the early 1970's, the ownership of the company changed, but Saltville remained the industrial hub of the region. A pictoral history of the company town is on display at the Museum of the Middle Appalachians. Most of the pictures are from the Totten Collection. The Totten Collection consists of over 1400 photographs which document over 100 years of happenings in the area. These photographs have been scanned and cataloged on a state-of-the-art digital image retrieval system. Copies are available for purchase in the museum store.
