Because of its importance in the production of salt, Saltville was known as the "Salt Capital of the Confederacy." The Saltville Valley, the most heavily fortified non-military site in the confederacy, produced four million bushels of salt in 1864.
At the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, see artifacts left behind by soldiers who fought in the two battles which occurred in the Saltville Valley.
