October, 1864
Battle of Cedar Branch:
In the fall of 1864, natural resources such as salt were becoming more important and the salt supplies from Saltville were vital to the survival of the Confederacy.

October 2, 1864 -- a cold and foggy morning -- Confederate troops, outnumbered 2 to 1, successfully defended the Saltworks and defeated a Union Army at Cedar Branch, near Saltville.

 December, 1864
At the end of Stoneman's Southwest Virginia raid, the Saltworks were destroyed.

Each year the Saltville Foundation sponsors
paleontological and archeological research in the Saltville area.
